Green in the Eye

In the hall, I heard someone trying to stifle a sob. It’s a young lady a few seats across. The film ended. People dispersed. We went out together.
My lodge and her apartment turned out to be two neighbouring houses. I accompanied her.
“The film quite touched you”, I said.
“It’s a parallel with my life”, she said.
“Oh.”
“Our love marriage is on the rocks.”
“I’m so sorry.”
“He’s madly possessive. He never liked me talking to any outsider. Once at a party I discussed a book’s merit with another invitee, a writer. Since then we’ve been living apart…”
